Interested in Being an Ultrasound Technician?

Looking for a move into a technical / medical career field, but not sure where to turn? If so, becoming an ultrasound technician may be a wise career move. Ultrasound imaging is a fast growing medical field, expected to grow by 27%+ in the next few years according to the US Board of Labor Statistics. The average salary for a sonographer is around fifty thousand dollars and up, and as more medical practices use ultrasound technology, the job market is only going to continue to grow and grow.

What do ultrasound techs do? Well, surprising to some, they do more than just give pregnant mothers ultrasounds. Ultrasounds can be used to diagnose multiple health problems in patients, especially soft tissue injuries and can also be used to help guide instruments in biopsies and other medical procedures. Ultrasound technicians are responsible for the use and maintenance of ultrasound equipment to diagnose issues with a patient or an unborn baby, and they can also be responsible for communicating the findings with the patients.

Ultrasounds themselves are very non-invasive medical imaging procedures. They are regarded as less dangerous than x-rays, and are generally harmless to patients. Unlike x-rays, ultrasound images do not expose patients to harmful radiation. Also, ultrasounds are continuously moving images that can be monitored by medical personnel, whereas x-rays are single snapshots of a patient. Ultrasound is an active form of scanning, whereas x-rays are more of a passive form.

Being an ultrasound tech can be a stressful, but ultimately rewarding job. Working closely with doctors and patients can require that an ultrasound technician be emotionally cool, and sensitive to the needs of the patient. Sometimes a technician will have the joy of delivering great news, but ultimately, the technician will also be responsible for sharing horrible, heartbreaking news as well.

Becoming an ultrasound technician isn't for everyone. A person with a high attention to detail, a desire to enter the medical field, and a willingness to help both doctors and patients alike can find solace in becoming an ultrasound technician. The pay is decent, the job can be rewarding, and being an ultrasound technician can open doors into other areas of the medical field. Whether a person is fresh out of school looking to start a new career in a medical field, or that person is already in a medical field and looking to expand their horizons, becoming an ultrasound technician can be a rewarding career move.
