Are 3D/4D Ultrasounds Safe During Pregnancy?

Many of the parents crave to know about the unborn baby in the mother's womb during pregnancy. Pregnancy ultrasound scan that is 4D ultrasound and 3D ultrasound allows the impatient parents to have a glance into the womb. Pregnancy ultrasound comes from a machine which creates an image of the interior part of the body.

Ultrasound during pregnancy reveals many details about the baby:

• Health of the heart of the baby

• Size of the baby

• The condition of the other organs of the baby like the brain, kidney, spine and how they are growing

• Anticipated date of birth

• The pictures move on the computer screen and it almost looks like a movie.

In the excitement of trying to see the baby we also need to know how safe are the 3D/4 D ultrasounds?

4D scan is equally safe as compared to the 2D scan. Ultrasound scans, do not carry any form of radiation.

The only risk is the raised temperature. It is known scientific fact that the sound waves cause rise in temperature among the tissues they pass through. This rise in temperature depends on the acoustic power and the duration of the scan. There is enough solid evidence that the elevation of temperature by 1.5 degrees Celsius is safe and within the accepted standards. In reality this temperature is rarely reached.

For causing potential harm it is necessary that the temperature rises to 41 degrees Celsius but this temperature is never reached during pregnancy ultrasound scanning. Acoustic outputs that get produced by the B MODE ultrasound are not as high enough to produce harmful effects.

The society of obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada and Health Canada has produced some guidelines for the diagnostic ultrasound. They list that ultrasound should not be used for the below reasons:

• To determine the sex of the baby, solely for non medical purpose

• For commercial use, like trade shows or capturing videos of the baby

• To capture the picture of the baby, solely for non medical purpose

Benefits of ultrasound during pregnancy:

• It provides the care provider and the mother with vital medical information. It helps to decide the future course of action.

Potential risks of Pregnancy ultrasound:

• There is no solid evidence to indicate that the levels of ultrasound used on humans are harmful. But, some animal studies indicate with higher levels of ultrasound some changes in cell structure or function may occur. It might even lead to cell death. These studies show that the tissue or body parts under examination under the high frequency waves get altered.

• The biggest risk is the possibility of identifying something outside the normal range, with the baby. These unusual findings generally get resolved on their own or they are simply normal.

It is a path breaking experience for the mother to have an ultrasound and is safe too.
