Are 3D/4D Ultrasounds Safe During Pregnancy?

Many of the parents crave to know about the unborn baby in the mother's womb during pregnancy. Pregnancy ultrasound scan that is 4D ultrasound and 3D ultrasound allows the impatient parents to have a glance into the womb. Pregnancy ultrasound comes from a machine which creates an image of the interior part of the body.

Ultrasound during pregnancy reveals many details about the baby:

• Health of the heart of the baby

• Size of the baby

• The condition of the other organs of the baby like the brain, kidney, spine and how they are growing

• Anticipated date of birth

• The pictures move on the computer screen and it almost looks like a movie.

In the excitement of trying to see the baby we also need to know how safe are the 3D/4 D ultrasounds?

4D scan is equally safe as compared to the 2D scan. Ultrasound scans, do not carry any form of radiation.

The only risk is the raised temperature. It is known scientific fact that the sound waves cause rise in temperature among the tissues they pass through. This rise in temperature depends on the acoustic power and the duration of the scan. There is enough solid evidence that the elevation of temperature by 1.5 degrees Celsius is safe and within the accepted standards. In reality this temperature is rarely reached.

For causing potential harm it is necessary that the temperature rises to 41 degrees Celsius but this temperature is never reached during pregnancy ultrasound scanning. Acoustic outputs that get produced by the B MODE ultrasound are not as high enough to produce harmful effects.

The society of obstetricians and Gynecologists of Canada and Health Canada has produced some guidelines for the diagnostic ultrasound. They list that ultrasound should not be used for the below reasons:

• To determine the sex of the baby, solely for non medical purpose

• For commercial use, like trade shows or capturing videos of the baby

• To capture the picture of the baby, solely for non medical purpose

Benefits of ultrasound during pregnancy:

• It provides the care provider and the mother with vital medical information. It helps to decide the future course of action.

Potential risks of Pregnancy ultrasound:

• There is no solid evidence to indicate that the levels of ultrasound used on humans are harmful. But, some animal studies indicate with higher levels of ultrasound some changes in cell structure or function may occur. It might even lead to cell death. These studies show that the tissue or body parts under examination under the high frequency waves get altered.

• The biggest risk is the possibility of identifying something outside the normal range, with the baby. These unusual findings generally get resolved on their own or they are simply normal.

It is a path breaking experience for the mother to have an ultrasound and is safe too.

Pregnancy Ultrasounds - Essential For Smooth Delivery

Pregnancy ultrasounds are one of the most reliable tests conducted after the initial confirmation of pregnancy is done through routine pregnancy tests that measure the presence of the HCG hormone. These ultrasounds are conducted at regular intervals to determine the growth and the position of the baby and are generally used by doctors to get an accurate picture about the progress of a woman's pregnancy. The risk of miscarriage can be avoided by conducting these ultrasounds at regular intervals.

An ultrasound is conducted through the passing of sound waves that help in the creation of an image on an electronic monitor. Pregnancy ultrasounds use high frequency sound that creates a darker or lighter image of the human tissues on a video screen. These images are in the forms of dots and can be deciphered by qualified technicians only. The dense tissues in a human body such as bones appear white on the electronic screen while soft tissues are a bit dark, and fluids appear as black on the screen.

Types of Pregnancy Ultrasounds

Generally two types of ultrasounds are used to check a pregnant woman's growth and health. The first type of ultrasound, the Trans Vaginal Ultrasound is used in the first trimester of a woman's pregnancy to check the status of her cervix, uterus, gestational sac, embryo and other deep pelvic structures. This type of ultrasound is a hand held probe that is inserted into a woman's vagina and is generally of ten minute duration.

The Trans-Abdomen Ultrasound is conducted in the second and the third trimester of pregnancy and is aimed at getting a clear picture of the fetus and the placenta. This type of ultrasound can only be conducted when the bladder is full since a full bladder helps to distinguish the fetal parts. Under this test, a lubricating gel is applied to the woman's abdomen and than an instrument is placed over the gel. This instrument helps in the formation of the baby's image on the video screen which can be deciphered by an expert technician who will than give us the details about the baby's positioning and growth. The duration of this type of ultrasound is around 20-30 minutes.

Pregnancy ultrasounds are helpful in determining the exact age of the baby and its development at various stages. These ultrasounds can also tell us if there are multiple pregnancies or if there is a problem with the fetus or if the position of the placenta is inaccurate. Any other type of problem with the uterus or any other kind of abnormality during the pregnancy is also revealed by the pregnancy ultrasounds. These tests have no side effects and should be conducted to ensure the smooth delivery of the baby and to ensure that the mother's health is normal.

Pregnancy ultrasounds play an important role to determine a healthy pregnancy.

Ultrasounds are one of the most important pregnancy tests.

Reports of ultrasounds help to avoid risk of miscarriage. Special tests such as trans vaginal ultrasound are done for diagnosis of severe pregnancy complications. Pregnancy Period has more information about pregnancy tests and other issues related to pregnancy.

Moving Beyond Two Dimensional Obstetrical Ultrasounds

Ultrasounds have become commonplace in today's modern world; yet, their ability to provide mothers and families with a view of their baby never ceases to be a miracle. Due to this amazing technology, you can know the gender of your baby as early as seventeen weeks into the pregnancy. Further still, progress in 3D ultrasound allows you to view a three-dimensional volume image of your developing fetus. While the standard common obstetric diagnostic mode is 2D scanning, in 3D fetal scanning sound waves sent at different angles capture the image in 3D. If captured rapidly and animated, the images produce a 4D ultrasound, which involve additional movement. While 3D is still a picture of the baby, 4D is the live motion of the baby.

While the FDA's limits on obstetrical ultrasound are to protect against harmful side effects, the risk lies in the duration of the ultrasound; whether it is 2D or 3D makes no difference. In addition to the duration of ultrasound exposure, other risks include the intensity of ultrasound waves and the frequency of ultrasound sessions. If used properly, there are no physical effects. Neither the mother nor the fetus can hear or feel ultrasounds; the only indication of the waves is slight warmth, because they are a form of energy. The biggest risk in 3D ultrasound occurs when women substitute it for prenatal care. This exam is not under any circumstances to take the place of a complete medical diagnostic ultrasound, or any prenatal medical requirements.

While traditional 2D ultrasounds are done between seventeen and twenty weeks, the best time for a 3D ultrasound is between twenty-four and thirty weeks. An ultrasound between twenty-eight to thirty weeks may provide better close-up pictures; however, after thirty two weeks there's a chance that the baby may have already descended into the pelvis and getting a 3D image would be impossible. As always during your pregnancy, consult frequently with your physician and discuss when a 3D ultrasound would be the best for you.
