The Love of Babies Isn't the Only Requirement of an Ultrasound Tech

Hearing the heartbeat of an unborn fetus for the first time can be breathtaking for the mother to be and experiencing this reaction makes the job worthwhile for many ultrasound technicians. The love of babies and ultrasound techs often go hand in hand. When you think of an ultrasound, it is highly likely that you envision a sonogram of a baby. However, taking images of unborn babies is only one aspect of a sonographer's job.

An ultrasound tech is known by a few different titles. They are also called sonographers and ultrasonographers. However, they are one in the same. He or she is a trained expert in the field of sonography. Sonography is a form of x-ray in that it uses a method to see inside the body. However, unlike other imaging technologies, ultrasound will not view the bones. The method used is sound waves. With the use of a transducer and water-based gel, the ultrasound tech can scan the area of the body to see if there appears to be anything abnormal. Next, the sonographer is expected to interpret her findings and communicate those findings to the patient's doctor.

Ultrasound is used in many of the same areas as a traditional x-ray and MRI except that it doesn't have any side effects that the other technologies may have.

There are many specialties that use ultrasound technicians such as OB-GYN, Echocardiography, and Neurology just to name a few. However, if you have a love for babies and find ultrasound technology fascinating than a career as an OB-GYN sonographer may be for you.

Training

Typically, a diagnostic medical sonography program can take at least 18 months to complete. However, there are one-year programs available as well as four-year degree programs. The more training you have the more income you will make. That's no different from any other field. What is different about a career in DMS is that a new graduate with the minimum amount of training will still make more than other similar medical fields.

Specialties

Towards the end of the DMS program, students will have the opportunity to work in several specialties. If you love babies than working in obstetrics is a great opportunity to be doing what you love and getting paid well for it. As a student of DMS, you will see firsthand which specialty fits you best.

Competition

A career in sonography is competitive because of how well they are paid and how mentally rewarding this field can be; however, because of the demand for qualified ultrasound techs in so many areas, there is room for everyone.

Skill & Qualities

Successful ultrasound techs love babies, are great with people and are extremely patient. In addition, the love for math, science and finding the study of the human anatomy interesting is a plus. The job can be physically demanding because you will be standing most of your shift. The ability to lift at least 50 pounds is also necessary. Staying in shape is never a problem for an ultrasound technician because of the physical demands that the job requires.
